The Art of Stained Glass

Stained glass is an art form in which usefulness and beauty become one. Hand-painted pieces of glass, arranged symmetrically or freely, are joined by lead networks and set into windows and doors alike — turning daylight into a play of colour and feeling.

An art rediscovered

The renewed interest in stained glass has brought about what is now called “a new golden age of glass”. Contemporary homes feature striking glass entrances, artistic windows and lighting inspired by the famous Tiffany lampshades, while today's artists keep inventing new forms and styles.

A thousand-year-old craft

The word “vitraliu” comes from the French vitrail and describes windows built from pieces of coloured glass held within a metal framework. The technique was first documented around the year 1100 by the monk Theophilus, and until the 18th century stained glass remained closely tied to Gothic architecture and church building. In Western Europe, Catholic churches were graced with extraordinary painted windows made almost a thousand years ago. The more modest churches of Eastern Europe adopted the craft — used to separate the stillness within from the bustle outside — much later, with the revival of stained glass at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. A decisive shift came with the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 19th century, who replaced the traditional lead came with copper foil. That innovation allowed intricate cuts and layered glass, opening up entirely new artistic possibilities.

From churches to modern homes

The beauty of painted glass, brought to life by light, gradually moved from sacred buildings into everyday ones, enriching the character of residential interiors. Until recently, stained glass seemed reserved for grand spaces tied to a noble past. Mozaic Vitralii SRL has changed that.
